History & Context

The Milk Factory property is rich with history. In 1881, John Gail Borden built the family empire atop a hill in the Hudson Valley, set in the rolling fields that hug the Wallkill River, among the Shawangunk Mountains and Hudson River. This was the home of his family farm, pastures, and living estates. In 1884, Borden’s New York Condensed Milk Company built its largest condensery along Route 208. It was designed to process the milk of 5,000 cows from nearby farms in Ulster and Orange counties.

Development Team

The Milk Factory is being developed by Michael Dorf, Founder and CEO of City Winery. His 35-year history in hospitality has created a number of internationally-recognized brands including The Knitting Factory, City Winery, Digital Club Network, and City Vineyard, among other start-ups. City Winery is a world-class 17-location, 1000-employee, and quickly expanding chain of venues in the United States. Michael & Company pride themselves on adaptive reuse of older buildings– preserving the old character while renovating them into user-friendly hospitality environments.

City Winery Hudson Valley is a fully-functioning winery, restaurant, hotel and event space with its main production facility in the Village of Montgomery only 10-minutes away. The 100-year-old historic Montgomery Mills facility has been highly regarded as a tremendous success, receiving accolades from architects, designers, and historians. City Winery will become a major tenant managing the food & beverage operations of the project including the Factory Winery & Distillery, Moo, Utter Coffee, and services throughout the hotel. Michael Dorf Presents will oversee the construction and development of the entire facility. Michael Dorf also considers himself a local, being a homeowner living 15-minutes away for the past 30 years.
